About Picante

archeological-site

Su Picante is a tomb of giants, an ancient Nuragic tomb located behind the beach of Berchida.

In the territory of Siniscola, much of the archaeological evidence still evident today can be traced back to the Nuragic age. The tomb stands isolated, situated on a plateau adjacent to the Caddare stream. The monument can be reached from Siniscola by driving along the S.P. 72 Irgoli – Capo Comino. After about 4.5 km, (between km 16 and 17), turn left and across a dirt road, after 1 km, going right at each fork, you reach the monument.

Prior to the excavation and restoration activities it was hidden, covered by a mound of earth and rubble and with large tampering given by successive uses over time, much of it done by mechanical means that removed part of the chamber and exedra.

Completely built of local granite, it has a rectangular corridor covered by horizontal slabs and the semicircular exedra at the front, while no evidence was found to confirm the presence of the centered stele in the entrance, in front of the burial chamber, in the center of the exedra. The entire structure is bordered by a mound composed of a mixture of earth and small stones, enclosed by a retaining masonry formed by slabs set in a knife shape.

The excavation yielded a few obsidian fragments; bone remains were absent, both because of tampering but mainly because of the acidity of the granite soils. More numerous were the ceramic fragments, found in the ceremonial area of the exedra, on the right side, pertaining to ollae, pots and pans, bowls and cups, handles and a vague stone necklace.

These are mostly ceramics with coarse and poorly fired, stick-smoothed impasto, with some plastic decoration consisting of vertical ribs and drafts; a few other ceramic fragments are slightly more refined. All of these materials are pertinent to the Nuragic Age, specifically the Middle Bronze Age, since it suggests that the tomb was built in its entirety and used during this time frame.
